Can anybody tell me why the top row keys will only work when pressing the function key, my husband may have pressed something but he i not really sure if he did, is there a way to get it back to normal Please.

You can change whether they work as F1, F2 etc or brightness, sound etc by going to Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard -- then select Keyboard at the top of that window and add or remove the checkmark in front of "Use all F1, F2 etc as standard function keys."
