Need help setting up a testing server with OS X 10.7.5

I have been trying to get a localhost testing server for Wordpress applications and plugins set up on my iMac running OS X 10.7.5.

I installed XAMPP. By default it installs into the Applications folder. I also installed the Wordpress plugin. It installed into the XAMPP/xamppfiles/apps/wordpress folder.

When I type http://localhost into the browser it brings up my Mac's default test page (index.html.en) that is stored in: Macintosh HD/Library/Web Sharing/Documents. So, I know that Apache is running. However, the XAMPP Application Manager does not recognize that Apache is running, and lists its status as "Stopped" in its status window.

If I type http://localhost/wordpress I get:

**

Not Found The requested URL /wordpress was not found on this server. Apache/2.2.26 (Unix) DAV/2 Server at localhost Port 80

**

In the terminal, I did a configuration test (sudo apachectl configtest) which gave me the following:

httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using Jennifers-iMac-2.local for ServerName Syntax OK

How do I tell/redirect my Mac to recognize the apache2 web server and Wordpress plugins in the XAMPP/xamppfiles folder? Do I need to move the XAMPP folder into the Macintosh HD/Library/Web Server/Documents folder or elsewhere? Do I have to change some of the configuration files using TextEdit or Terminal?

(incidentally, I do have a "Sites" folder in my User directory. I'm guessing that was left over from Snow Leopard….)

Note: I am not a developer by trade….
