Using airport express without a modem

Hi!

My building provides internet access and clearly states that if you would like Wifi all you need is a router- explicitly says no modem needed. I got the Airport Express and am unable to fully connect to the wifi from my wireless electronics. There is an amber light flashing whenever I turn it on. Another potential issue is when I created my password for my network it asked me to restart the modem. The only problem is I don't have a modem. I just have the ethernet cable plugged into the jack, My ISP cannot help me. They say it is an issue I should be able to resolve with the router company considering I have internet access when I plug the ethernet cable into my computer. Could someone please advise me on how to handle this situation. Can I not use an Airport Express unit for my particular situation? Any info would be appreciated!

Also- my only computer is a Dell laptop. My other wireless devices are an iphone 5s, ipad generation 3, and an xbox 360.

Thanks!

Michelle

You can do the setup with dell computer using v5.6.1 airport utility for windows.. or even better your iPad using iOS version airport utility.

You need to plug the wall ethernet port to the WAN port of the Express.

Factory reset the express.. disconnect power.. hold in the reset button.. power on again.. keep holding in reset for about 10sec.. front led starts blinking rapidly.

Now run through the setup.. note the following.

The building outlet is usually a private IP address.. so if you see the IP address (where mine shows 169.254.x.x) is 10.x.x.x you are going to have issues.

The express will have to be setup as router.. And it will likely give double NAT errors which you cannot avoid.

Also I need to know if there is a login webpage or something difficult to the setup. That will make it much harder.

What you will need to do is give me all that info and I can then show you how to fix it.. or at least use the Express even if it is not perfect.
