Macbook Pro trackpad suddenly won't click but cursor moves?

Once a week or so, I am suddenly unable to click using my trackpad. I am, however, able to move the cursor with the trackpad. Whenever this happens, I have to shut down my computer. Does anyone know how to fix this or know of any alternative to shutting it down? I have a 13 inch Macbook Pro, mid-2012 w/ the latest version of Yosemite.

Hi cjc0220,

I can make 2 suggestions to help diagnose this problem.

Have you tried enabling "Tap to Click" in your Trackpad preferences and see if the problem still occurs?

Have you tried using an external USB Mouse when this problem occurs and see if you can click with it?

I have seen many strange trackpad issues and normally its due to a dust build up inside it or it has become faulty for whatever reason.

Hope this helps
