Q: How do I remap a key?

If it is just a simple key substitution, you could try any hotkey mapping utility. I preferences is for BetterTouchTool, as it also gives me the ability to create many custom keypad gestures.

Like the one to the left of the 1 key, which shows § unshifted and 1/2 shifted, but which produces < and >.

That's odd. 1/2 is normally only found on Windows keyboards, Apple keyboards are supposed to have a different symbol printed there:

What does your key to the left of the Z produce?

Aug 11, 2015 11:48 AMby James Wilde,§, ° and ¶, the last with the Apple key. But it shows <, > and |. In other words these two keys (left of 1 and left of Z) are more or less reversed.
I should have said I'm using a Windows keyboard, not a Mac one. I see I gave false info in the OP. I'm on my Mac-Mini, not the MBP.
