Q: How do I get Safari to open on the last session? I just bought a MacBook Pro and I still have to learn the ropes of the device...

I spent the last few hours updating the Software and the pre-installed apps. When I used my old PC ( with Windows ) Chrome and Firefox used to open themselves on the last session (i.e. the panels I was using were restored ) and I don't know how to set this on Safari. Any help?

I don't know if it makes a difference but I set the language as Italian, so maybe the various options are not in the same place... maybe

PS. It asked me what operating system I have installed... on the box it reads OS X pre-installed and in the settings it says OS X 10.10.3 but I don't know if it's this "Yosemite" one or another...

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), null

Hi Lucacerr. To enable Resume, an OS X feature that relaunches apps to the state they were in when they were last quit, including Safari, from the menu bar navigate to  > System Preferences > General and if selected, deselect "Close windows when quitting an app". Some apps may have their own preferences for restoring windows.

To selectively disable Resume for an app on a per session basis, from the menu bar navigate to the app name, i.e. Safari, hold down the Option key and click Quit and Close All Windows. The keyboard shortcut is Command-Option-Q. Optionally, hold down the Shift key when relaunching an app to prevent it from reopening its windows from the last session.

If you closed Safari's windows when quitting, and would like to reopen its windows from the last session, from the menu bar navigate to History and click Reopen All Windows from Last Session.

@Roote: I followed your instructions ( and eventually changed the language to English ) but it still doesn't reopen Safari with the last session...

@Eric Root: I checked... Safari- Preferences- General but there isn't the option there.

Hi Lucacerr. If you made sure the checkbox beside "Close windows when quitting an app" is unchecked, and you quit Safari with its windows open, Safari should restore all windows when relaunched. Don't Quit and Close All Windows unless you want Safari to relaunch without the windows from the last session.

To see the option in Safari > Preferences > General, Safari opens with "All windows from last session"...

Navigate to  > System Preferences > General and select "Close windows when quitting an app":

Keep in mind that if you select "Close windows when quitting an app", windows will not be restored in other apps, and only in Safari if you set the option Safari opens with "All windows from last session".

Thank you Roote, you have been most helpful. I enabled the option in the System Preferences and the option to resume Safari from the last session appeared in the settings of the browser. Thanks again!
