Connecting Ipod 4th generation 20gb to Imac 2013 running OS X 10.10.4

I have an older generation iPod, Model A1059, which is still in great working order. I originally set this up in Windows 7, but now own an iMac 2013 27". The IMac does not recognize the iPod. If I go through the reset routine describe on this site, and connect it to the iMac using the old-style cable, should the iMac recognize it? (I don't want to go through this if it won't, for the iPod still has older music on it and works just fine through the Bose SoundDock. Thanks

Howdy Jim,

I understand your iPod with Click Wheel was working fine on your Windows PC but your iMac is not recognizing it.

Yes, the Mac should work fine with the iPod. Do you still have the PC so you can migrate the music and other data to the Mac independent of the iPod?

See also Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if you have any content on your device that isn't in your library.

A Mac should be able to read a Windows formatted iPod (but not vice-versa) so I wouldn't expect you to have to restore the device to get it to work.
