iMessage recipients name error

How does one get an iMessage recipient's name to list correctly? When I type in the recipient's name or cell # on an iMessage, both the name + # show and are highlighted in red. The same happens even if just the name shows. In contacts, the recipient's cell# does not show an iMessage icon when the mouse arrow passes over it like a recipient who is a Mac user does. Help, please.
