Best workout option for hot yoga class

What Apple Watch workout option would be best at tracking calorie burn for a hot yoga class? My wife has noticed that when a workout is not started, the slow motions associated with hot yoga do not seem to trigger an accurate assessment of calorie burn as a "regular" activity, nor does it count toward the 30 minute activity goal. But I have read that the "other" option often defaults to a calorie burn rate associated with a brisk walk, which does not seem like it would give you enough "credit".

Hi Andy

"Other" seems to be the most obvious Workout option for yoga.

However, in respect of wearing Apple Watch during hot yoga:

  • Be mindful of the Important handling information in the Apple Watch User Guide:
    • Apple Watch is designed to work best in ambient temperatures between 32° and 95° F (0° and 35° C).

Apple Watch can be damaged and battery life shortened if stored or operated outside of these temperature ranges.

    • Avoid exposing Apple Watch to dramatic changes in temperature or humidity.
    • The following may affect the water resistance of Apple Watch and should be avoided:

Wearing Apple Watch in the sauna or steam room.

  • Under the terms of the Apple One (1) Year Limited Warranty (a similar exclusion also applies to AppleCare+):

"Other" is the best available, but it's worth remembering that the Watch doesn't do so well at tracking non-aerobic exercise. The key factor affecting calorie burn calculation is heart rate, but exercises like yoga, Pilates, Alexander Technique often don't push up the heart rate enough for the Watch to see them as exercise. It might be that, when WatchOS2 is released, there will be some 3rd party apps that do a better job for yoga - WatchOS2 will allow native 3rd party Watch apps and access to the sensors

Try Other and see whether it help. If not, please consider posting your experience to the feedback link below - the data might help Apple make this work better.
