Thunderbolt to HDMI issues

I am using a MacBook AIr 2013 on Yosemite 10.10.4 and I am trying to hook it up to my TV using an HDMI cord and the Thunderbolt adaptor. I have messed around with all the scale settings, mirror settings, arrangement settings, pretty much everything that comes to mind, and nothing works. When the thunderbolt/HDMI is plugged in, the mac screen flashes and detects the TV, but nothing displays on the TV. I think this goes without saying, but the cord is plugged into HDMI 1 and the tv is set on HDMI 1 input. If you have any advice or solutions, please let me know!
