Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 do, indeed, utilize the same cable and connector. Thunderbolt 2 aggregates the two 10Gb/s channels in order to achieve the 20Gb/s speeds indicated. By splitting information across the two channels, the amount of time necessary to transfer the same amount of information is half that of utilizing a single channel to transfer the same of data.
Thunderbolt technology supports fast data transfers with two independent channels of 10Gb/s each. And Thunderbolt 2 technology can bond the two channels for a superfast 20Gb/s. Use this cable to connect Thunderbolt-enabled devices to the Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port on your Mac.
