Because that capability is not engineered into the Pages v5 application.
Pages '09, now discontinued, is still available from Amazon, and works under Yosemite. It has a status bar at the bottom of the document. By default, it shows Page 1 of n. Click on this page count section, and it changes to Go to Page: __ .
If you had Pages '09 installed, then updated to Yosemite and installed Pages v5.5 or later, the Pages '09 application would have been silently moved into your Applications/iWork '09 folder.
thanks for the advice. I had pages 09 on macbook but I bought a new macbook air. I have not been able to transfer files by migration assistant. If I bought 09 from Amazon I would have to buy a device to transfer the software and pay for it. For now, I'll go scroll around. I hope apple will put that feature back in
There are still a couple of options.
Purchase iWork '09 from Amazon, install, and immediately follow it with the Apple iWork 9.3 update. That gives you the latest updates.
Existing Pages v5 documents will need to be exported to Pages '09 before opening them in Pages '09 v4.3.
