You have done a pretty good job of telling us:

    • time of last joy - this is where you "start" your investigation
    • troubleshooting steps you have taken - all great steps
    • Mac model - also great

    • What OS X version?
    • What Event occurred since your last joy with your camera? This is the likely culprit... although there is a chance that you have a hardware issue

A visit to an Apple Retail Store Genius Bar may be the easiest way to get this diagnosed - but all this information - in detail - will help them help you best.

Thanks for your response.   I have OS X version 10.10.5.  Unfortunately, I can't think of anything unusual that has happened since I last used the camera.  If you have any other suggestions for something to check, let me know, otherwise I'll bring it in to our local certified mac repair place.

    You're welcome.

OK - Newest version of Yosemite - I'm betting that that qualifies as an event that occurred since "... several weeks ago..." - that is a pretty recent update if I am correct. (I never said an event had to be "unusual") Any other events that may not  seem important may also be in the mix. Add - upgrade - update - software or hardware -- leaving no stone unturned?

When you take in, be sure and have a timeline of all events built since your last joy - may help to write it down and sort it out as if preparing for a presentation (it's all show biz, as they say - tell a Story)

I got curious about the camera not showing in the USB list... take a look at this article - "resetting the SMC" sounds like a simple effort and sure cannot hurt >

Mac USB Ports Stopped Working? It's Likely Easy to Fix

7 days ago - If multiple USB devices are not working on a particular port, or all ports, then it's obviously less ... For those with a MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, all you need to do is this: .... I also lose the Facetime camera on occasion (no reason).

best luck and don't forget to let us know how it turns out.

Thank you for the options!  No dice though on the SMC reset.  Didn't change it.

I updated the operating system after I noticed that the camera wasn't working...hoping it would help.  I'll try to think through any other updates or changes before I talk to the local repair shop.

I'll let you know what they find out.

    Best,

    A

    Hey A Munday,

I am having exactly the same issue on my macbook pro (Mid 2012, Non retina), can't see the camera in system report under 'camera' or 'usb', and I was planning to do an SMC reset. Did you not see any changes post the SMC Reset? Did you get any help from the Apple support? I took mine to the local BestBuy Geek Squad (from where I bought it) and they said it could take anywhere from $150-300 for the issue to be fixed ($300 if it is a hardware issue). I'll probably do an SMC reset and if it doesn't help, then I'll get an external webcam. Let me know if/how you solved the issue.
