I am looking to disable the use of FaceTime and Messages on classroom computers. But as they are included as part of the OS I can't simply delete the apps. So how can I disable or block the use of those apps.
MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)
Should be covered under Parental Controls.
Unfortunately I have multiple students logging into each computer, I would have to add all potential students to every computer to manage them with parental controls and Apple's Profile Manager does not allow for the same settings under parental controls.
I haven't tried it, but maybe you could modify the permissions on the apps so that coudn't be used, or make the apps invisible.
I don't know why I didn't think of adjusting permissions before. Seems to be working great.
Try enabling the Root User.
Do a backup before doing anything. To delete them you will need to enable the Root User and log in as the Root User. You need to be very careful while logged in as the Root User because you can delete any file and could potentially ruin your system. As soon as the non-functioning applications are deleted, log out and use your normal account. Did I mention doing a backup?
