Mail message cannot be moved to trash, file exists.

I was cleaning out a mail box and deleted many messages, then tried to empty the trash. Mail quit, and when I reopened, the deleted items were no longer in the trash and still in the Inbox. Now, when I try to delete new messages, I get a message that the message cannot be moved to the trash because the file exists. Frequently, Mail crashes after the error message appears. The messages in question are in both the Inbox and the trash. This only happens on one of several Inboxes. I cannot figure out how to resolve this issue.
