Q: How do I approve a family purchase without using an apple product?

My children both have ipads and require my approval for purchasing apps from the itunes store. I do not personally have any apple devices so I do not receive any notifications on those approval request. How do I go about finding an approving those request?

To the best of my knowledge, it requires an iOS device or a Mac running Yosemite.

    I was able to approve an app purchase "in person" by typing in my Apple ID password into my son's iPod.  He just had to try to download it then click on the app and it gave the option for me to approve in person.  It was after "asking" a couple times that it finally gave me the "in person" option.

     

    It would be nice if Apple would make it so we could do it through iTunes but I think that functionality is not yet there as far as I can tell.

    You said what you don't have (Apple stuff), but not what you do have. For example, if you use Windows, I dare say Apple is smart not to get involved in purchase approvals through Windows, due to inherent security issues. Linux is as secure as OS X, but very few folks use Linux, so Apple would not have any incentive to develop some method for Linux purchase approvals.

     

    The current solution is for your kids to write down all their purchase needs throughout the day and talk to you about it at dinner time. Does that take you back to the era of Leave It To Beaver?
