Q: How to do user migration for new MacBook?

So I did an online chat support to get help on how to connect the new MacBook to a MacBook Pro 15 inch Retina to do a user migration. Here is a transcript of the chat. I cannot believe the Apple Tech did not know what a usb-c connector is. And then they just disconnect me instead of actually answering my questions or helping me out. Extremely disappointed with the level of support.

Now chatting with Justin, case # 860963280

Justin: Thanks for contacting AppleCare chat support. How can I help you?

Me: what cables do I need to do a user migration from a MacBook Pro 15 inch Retina to a MacBook?

Justin: Hello Chris! So you are just wondering what cables you would need to transfer files from one mac to another?

Me:yes

Justin: Okay no problem. I can understand why you’re asking, when I had to do this to my mac about a year ago I was a little unsure as well but no worries! I would be glad to provide you with this information!

Justin: You can use a USB, thunderbolt or even do it through wifi!

Justin: If you like I can send you an article on how to do it!

Me:well that's the problem, the macbook only has usb-c, so I need an adapter to convert it right?

Me:unless, is there a thunderbolt to usb-c adapter?

Justin: If you don’t mind giving me a few moments here, I will be glad to look into this for you!

Me:ok

Justin: Thanks!

Justin: Okay thanks for waiting Chris, I was just speaking to my senior advisor and she did inform me that you would need a thunderbolt adapter.

Me:ok cool, so you sell thunderbolt to usb-c?

Justin: I am looking through our store website trying to find you the page so I can send you the link. However I just googled a thunderbolt to usb-c and I do see that other resellers do have them but I will continue to look!

Justin: Thunderbolt Adapter Okay so after doing some research I did come across this. However you might still find them for cheaper on Amazon, eBay, or even newegg!

Justin: Are you still there?

Me:yes i am sorry! i had a phone call

Justin:No worries!

Me:Ok, I pulled up the thunderbolt to usb adapter, but that won't connect to the macbook

Justin: Okay, I can have a sales advisor contact you through a phone call since they are only available through phone, but I was looking through our website and that was the only product that I seen that was similar. May I have your phone number?

Me:no, that's ok. I can't believe you guys don't know how to connect the new macbook to a macbook pro for user migration. i shouldn't have to talk to sales.

Justin:Okay no problem! Take care!

Your chat session has ended. Thanks for using Apple's chat support.

You can do it by WiFi, slowly. You can do it by Ethernet, but you will need a pair of USB to Ethernet adapters plus a USB-C to USB adapter.

Or, you could do it the way I did it. I always maintain clones of my Macs' internal drives on external drives. This is something I would recommend to everyone, especially if you're currently not using any kind of backup procedure.

So, when it came time to migrate to my new MacBook, it was easily done from my external drive via a USB3 connection by using the USB-C to USB adapter. It took around 45 minutes.

So, if you don't have any kind of backup (either a clone or TimeMachine) on an external backup device, this my be a prudent time to get one.
