Q: airplay not staying connected

I have recently found that airplay from all devices (MacBook, iPhone 6, iPad) will not keep connection with Apple TV. Watching BBC iPlayer, NFL Game Time, or even playing music via airplay all stop after a few minutes. I have the fastest possible internet connection with Virgin Media...and have not had any trouble previously. No hub settings have been changed. Is anyone else having trouble keeping airplay connections with Apple TV?

Speed of your Internet connection has nothing to do with Airplay. Airplay is a Local Network service only and doesn't even need Internet connection.

Start with simple steps like cycle power on all of your devices which are participating in your Network including iPhone, iPad, Macbook, Apple TV and your Router.

If still not resolved, I would suggest two steps to do and you can choose which order you prefer:

    - restore your Apple TV to factory settings, setup again and test it again: Restore your Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation) - Apple Support

    - test your Apple TV on a different network possibly created by a different router at different location (your friend or other family member house).

If restoring Apple TV did the trick - most likely issue was caused by some corrupted settings.

If Airplay works ok on different Network, then issue is with settings on your Router or with Router itself.

If you have a dual-band Router which is keeping both networks 2.4 GHz and 5GHz in sync (both networks are broadcasted as one single Network), then

this might be the root of your troubles. Disable Sync Mode and keep both networks as a separate networks with a different names.

My son recently bought an Apple TV of his own and has it connected to his TV. Do you think this might be causing interference? It is normally in sleep mode...but yesterday I unplugged it so that it wasn't recognised on any of my devices as an optional airplay connection...and my airplay through my devices stayed never stopped.

It shouldn't affect things, we have 6 and don't experience any issues like that.

Thanks. Are they all connected to the same SSID? I have three different SSIDs being used on my router.

No I have more than one network but the are far enough apart (channel wise) not to interfere with each other, are yours.

Unfortunately looks like I am unable to set different channels for the SSIDs I have created. They all use the same channel. Now wondering if it would just be better to use one SSID for all devices to connect to.

Is there a reason you can't set different channels.

Channel selection on my router is only available in overall wireless frequency settings, which all SSIDs fall under. Although I am able to set permissions and filters per SSID...there is no option in the router to select unique channel settings for each SSID. I created three SSIDs initially for family filtering purposes...one for guest, one for my son, and another for everyone else in the household.
