I am trying to upgrade the operating sytem as normal on an ipad

Something is wrong James, a 3.9 GB update is too large. What version of iOS are on now. The latest is 8.4.1 and it should be a much smaller update.

I would try a hard reboot first. Hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons at the same time for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it comes up. You will not loose anything. Then check again and see what it tells you regarding the update. If you still cannot do it over WiFi, try the iTunes route, but again, no way that an update would take 3.9 GB.
