Solution for Bootcamp 6 error on Windows 10

I've had the same problem as many of you when trying to install Bootcamp 6 on my Windows 10 machine. The error about "not valid boot camp service" and wrong "bootcamp.msi" and "The installed product does not match the installation source(s)" kept popping up.

Here's what I did to fix it:

  • Create a restore point (just in case)
  • Make sure you downloaded BootCamp 6 via "Apple Software Update" (will also work if Apple releases the files directly for download)
  • Navigate to C:\Users\{yourUsername}\AppData\Local\Apple\Apple Software Update\ (you might need to turn on "Show hidden files" in Explorer if you can't see it), there you'll see a file called AppleBcUpdate.exe. Either open WinRar or rename that file to "AppleBcUpdate.exe.zip" (you might need to turn on "Show file extensions in Explorer) and double click it. Extract the two folders in there to the root of D:\ or C:\ (doesn't really matter).
  • Click the start button and type in "regedit". Right click -> Run as administrator
  • Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products and find the folder "A2C2B2AF14AEA5943980062716525D26". Rename that folder to something like "_A2C2B2AF14AEA5943980062716525D26" or whatever. You can also export it (as a backup) and then just delete it.
  • Close regedit.
  • Click the start button and type in "cmd". Right click -> Run as administrator
  • Type in "D:" (if you extract BootCamp to D:\). Then "cd BootCamp\Drivers\Apple". Now type in "BootCamp.msi" and hit enter.
  • The installer should now run through fine.
  • Restart your computer, even if you're not prompted to do so.

This is what worked for me. I have now a successful BootCamp 6 installation on Windows 10:

Leave it as is. If you run into any future Windows Update issues, we can address it then. If you dislike the idea, back up the registry, create a Windows System Restore point, and then delete the specific entry and values.

If you have already removed it, there is no need to put it back.

To get the AppleBcUpdate.exe file go to Apple Software Update. Before you start downloading it, in one of the menu items at the top you can select a "download only" option. This will download the Bootcamp update without trying to install it. Once you have a failed installation, the file deletes itself, so you need to stop it from installing once it's downloaded.

Many thanks alxkum. It worked for me in this way:

. Download Bootcamp 6 by Boot Camp Assistant in OS X.

. Follow these steps from alxkum in windows:

  • "Click the start button and type in "regedit".
  • Close regedit."

. Run Bootcamp 6. "If you're getting a "Windows Installer stopped working" dialog, just click on "Close Windows Installer" and it should continue to install".

Many thanks too! It worked for me with Mac Book Pro mid 2009. I had a clean Windows 10 installed. My observations:
- In my case there was not such folder in the registry. So I did not edit anything there and I just followed the instructions.

- Realtek audio drives hanged in my case too and I have followed the workaround (this had happened with Boot Camp 5 as well).

- I had tried different other ways before, like installing Bootcamp 5 drivers first and so on, and in those cases I had to reinstall some of the drivers. With this method though there have been no unrecognized devices and I'm extra pleased...

Thank you for posting this alxkum (and thank you to Loner T for bringing it to my attention). I cannot imagine how you figured this out!

I was having a devil of a time with this issue and wrote about it in another forum post here.

Initially there was no AppleBcUpdate.exe in the path you specified, so I ran Apple Software Update and let it begin installing the Bootcamp update. After the downloading phase finished and verifying began I stopped the installation. Now AppleBcUpdate.exe was present. The rest worked as you outlined in your post, including the Windows Installer failure message.

But that did not prevent the installation from continuing to run. After rebooting my Bluetooth mouse works (that was the only obvious problem after upgrading to W10) so I assume this confirms the BC update's success.

I'm curious is the registry edit needs to be undone for future installations to work. I did it just in case.

Thank you again!

I followed your way and the boot camp 6 is installed.

HOWEVER, (IMPORTANT, HOPE TO BE SOLVED SOON!)

here's the thing: the Microsoft office cannot be used. The Microsoft office 365 cannot be installed. All the apps like Words, Excel are no longer functional. It says something like your trial has end while that's not the case. Now you can only view the files but cannot modify them. ALL the office apps can no longer be used while they play huge role in Microsoft system.

One more thing, I tried to modify the file name "_A2C2B2AF14AEA5943980062716525D26" back to what is was "A2C2B2AF14AEA5943980062716525D26". That didn't work either.

Really need someone to solve this!
