2nd gen ipod won't play in car stereo with usb port. It shows "Do not disconnect."

I have a 2nd generation ipod and recently bought a new car. The owner's manual states that it should play when using a usb port; however, when I did that "Do Not Disconnect" showed on screen and did not play music. I notice this also happens on airplanes that have usb ports. What shall I do?
