Macbook pro gets overheated despite having applied thermal paste just 1 month ago

I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2012, 10 gb ram, 500 gb hd and 128 gb SSD.

1. For the last 25 days, since putting SSD and re-installing OS and all apps, the Mac has been shutting down almost daily. It either shuts down and restarts itself - or hangs interminably, forcing an external restart.

2. Suspecting that the problem may be overheating, I stared monitoring temprature using Istats. I discovered that the temperature would shoot to 90-100 degrees centigrade, even when the outside temp was cool. Activity monitor shows that nothing, CPU or anything else, is having an overload.

3. Started using constantly with cooling pad, and that decreased frequency from 2-3 times a day to once a day or once in two days.

4. In the last week, the problem became worse. Initially by increasing the internal fan to full speed using Istats control, I could get the temp under control (to the normal of 50-60 degrees). But after 2-3 days even with full fan, the temp kept spiking up and refused to cool down, requiring restart.

5. I started working in AC constantly and still the temp refused to stay down.

Additional problems: These are probably unrelated problems, but am mentioning it in case they are connected.

1. Safari would stop connecting to the net at least once a day - even when I could access the same sites with other browsers. After some time, the problem goes away on its own - only to come again the next day.

2. I keep a time machine (TM) backup and a non-TM backup. For non-TM backup, I tried sync folder pro, but it started deleting my files and creating huge delsync folders, so I shifted to folder sync. But for 410 GB syncing, it took 3 days and still couldn't complete because either the app would crash or the Mac would hang or shutdown. Also it was syncing files that I hadn't touched for years - don't know why.

3. Spotlight search finds some applications and doesn't find others eg it finds firefox, but not opera or chrome. I have to go to apps folder to find and open those apps - now I have started keeping them in the dock.

4. Smart folder search doesn't detect some files, even when they are present. Doing re-indexing didn't solve the issue.

5. I shifted to Mac 2 years ago and I have had so many issues - slow, shutting down etc - that I have had to do clean install 7 times till now. And after each install, it works well for a month or two and again gives problems.

6. I am a writer and my machine is usually on for 18 hrs daily. I shifted from windows to Mac believing that it would be stabler system, but I have had to spend more time on the machine in 2 years than what I had spent on windows in the last 10-15 years. It's been an overall unsatisfactory experience - and that's putting it mildly.

Thank you for your help.

@lllaass and @OGELTHORPE Extremely sorry for my delayed response. A friend took the Mac to an authorized Mac showroom about the same time I posted the query here. And they said they needed time to diagnose it - a few hours became more than a week - and they claimed that the Mac didn't overheat or shut down even once during that period. Very strange.

After I got it back, it's already shut down five times in two and half days. And now the problem is worse because the temperature rises very suddenly. One moment it's working fine and the next moment it shuts down. Here's what happened today morning about 3-4 hrs ago.

I was typing an email and opening a problematic facebook link in multiple browsers. The link had opened in Safari, but wasn’t opening in other browsers. In fact, opera and chrome then stopped opening any link, giving the error message “unable to connect to the internet.”

I was wondering why - I was able to send mail through gmail and a FTP upload was also going on. Then I tried to refresh a safari tab, but it too couldn’t connect to the internet. Then I couldn’t type anything on my gmail and the whole computer became non-responsive. It struck me that the problem might be due to over-heating, so I turned on my cooling pad (it was early morning and I had forgotten to turn it on) and I tried to increase the internal fan speed through istats. But the computer stayed hung and then it shut down and restarted. I noticed on the istats menu bar that the temperature was some 85 degrees centigrade. By the time all the apps opened and I could get the screen to be stable enough to take a screenshot, the temperature had lowered. Then I turned on activity monitor and took the necessary screenshots

Because the Mac is shutting down so fast, I was unable to take any screenshots or get Etrecheck reports when it was hot. Here's the present report. (After seeing it, I have changed gatekeeper settings to "“Mac App Store and identified developers.”:

So it would seem I am in the right forum. If I am not, can you please give the link for the right forum? Among all the communities here:

I could find only community for Macbook Pro: this one.

Open Activity Monitor and set it to ALL PROCESSES and CPU to display values from high to low. When the MBP gets hot, post images of both activity monitor and the temperature application for inspection.

As the computer is heating too fast and shutting down, I am unable to get any screenshots when it is heated.

Here are some shots of Istats from 10 days ago before I gave the mac to the store.

And here are Activity Monitor shots from today after the computer restarted and the screen stabilized enough to take screenshots - by that time, the temperature had come down from 80+ to around 60.

Sorry to load a lot of content again, but about an hour ago, the computer again heated up and remained heated ever after restart. So I was able to take both screenshots as well as get the Etrecheck report. But it seems the problem's become worse - it wouldn't cool down even with full internal fan and I had to shut it down by pressing the power button as it wouldn't shut down by the normal way. After letting it cool for half an hour, when I turned it on, it wouldn't connect to the net, even when the wi-fi was working fine on my iPad. Only now when I restarted it again did it connect to the net, and I am posting the reports below.

ccdas: Are these better than Apple authorised representatives? I just wasted a week on an authorised representative, who claimed that it never shut down even once. Maybe he was peeved with me because I didn't purchase SSD from him as I got a better deal elsewhere.

Anyway, I had two questions that might be relevant:

1. My Mac is on for almost 18 hrs daily - I am a writer, so I have a number of related apps open constantly, but I never do any heavy video processing or that kind of stuff. With a daily 18hr workload, how long can a Mac last?

2. I don't always work in an AC environment. I am in India where the temperature often becomes hot. But currently it's the rainy season, so the weather is cool. Also, the computer has been shutting down even when I have been working in AC. Does Mac need an AC environment always?

Consider installing a new battery. 1171 cycles has been good service and you have been fortunate.

>>> Ok, can do that. As I am usually near a power supply, the decreased number of hours of charge didn't matter much to me. Does using a battery with high cycle count cause the computer's overheating?

Based on the images you posted, rid the MBP of Google Chrome and all its parts. Is there a decrease in temperature?

>>> Removed chrome. By the way, which image indicated that chrome was the problem? The only image with a mention of chrome is this one, where it is using just 1% of the CPU

POST ONLY THE TEMPERATURE DISPLAY AND ACTIVITY MONITOR/CPU. The others are superfluous.

>>> Ok, I too was wondering about their relevance. Thanks for informing.

Ciao.

mail.google.com is related to my gmail which was opened in Safari. At that time, chrome wasn't even open. I use it very rarely - use Safari, Firefox, Opera and then Chrome in that order.

Also, regarding dropbox, I save all my word documents on it so that I can work on them from my other devices. So turning dropbox off on a long-term basis is not feasible for me unless I shift to something else like onedrive. Right now, it's taking 0.2% of CPU. I will keep an eye on it whenever the Mac starts heating. Will that do?

The fact is that you can use any applications that you wish. I am assuming that when you posted the Activity Monitor images and the Temperature chart that they were done simultaneously. If I an correct, turning off those applications should result in a temperature and fan speed drop. That is all I am testing for. If the temperature does not drop, then there must be some other reason that has to be determined.

Ciao.

Yes, both the measures were taken simultaneously.

Anyway, I stopped using Safari as suggested by lllaass, and today for the first time after over a month the computer didn't get overheated or hang or shut down. Will need to check for a few days, though, before I can say that the problem can be dealt with by ducking it.

Still, yesterday night the computer crashed, shut down and restarted while it was doing a backup using Folder Sync. I take backups on 4 hard disks, 2 using time machine and two using some other software. Good sync worked fine for nearly 2 years, but stopped working with Yosemite. Then I tried Sync Folder Pro, but it started deleting files arbitrarily and putting them in a delsync folders that appeared all over my computer. Then I tried Folder Sync, but it started syncing files that I hadn't touched for years and took days for sycing and crashed several times and never completed even one sync. For over a month, I haven't been able to take my non-TM backup.

Here's the etrecheck report of the crash in bold:

Any suggestions for some reliable app for non-TM backup?

Thanks.
