What will happen to my photos imported from iPhone to Mac if I turn off Photo Stream on my iPhone?

I'm trying to save some space on my iPhone, so I've been regularly importing photos into my Mac. What will happen if I turn off photo stream or delete these photos on my iPhone? My concern is whether import transfers all the photos in my iPhone or just the ones that are not yet synced through photo stream - and if the latter is the case I'll lose most of my photos when I turn off photo stream. Please advise!

If you imported your photos to your Mac using iPhoto or Image Capture then you have a hard copy on your Mac and they will not be deleted by anything you do on your phone. If you are just relying on iCloud for your photo backup (not advisable) and you have your phone and Mac set to sync across iCloud then anything you do on one will affect the other (but not the hard copies that were truly imported). Of course if you want to be double sure, you could just copy the phone pictures to a flash drive or an external HD by going through your Mac's Finder prior to deleting them from the phone. Never hurts to be redundant with photos that are impossible to replace.
