Hard drive only works in 1st tray

I have a 2010 tower, new to me, 16 gb RAM, came with a single drive in Tray 1, boots up fine, but cannot get computer to recognize any working drives in tray 2-4. The drives work fine in my older 2006 tower and off USB in the newer computer---the SATA connections seem to be mating okay, though sleds 2 and 4 seem to require a little more of a push. Is there a setting somewhere that needs to be adjusted?

There are no settings.

Try resetting the SMC

So if you move the working drive in bay 1 with its sled to another bay it is not recognized?

Can yo feel if that drive is spinning/getting power?

With the Mac booted via bay1i and another drive in another bay does System Profiler show anything in the other bay?

Thanks for the assist! Weird, no joy on the SMC reset, but in system profiler the boot drive (from bay 1) and bay 3 was showing up, which led me to fix a rookie mistake--under general preferences, usb drives was checked, but fixed drives were not which is why bay 3 wasn't showing up on the desktop (the usb was)--In system profiler, the drive I had in bay 2 would not show up in 2 or 4, the boot drive worked in all bays, so now I have the boot drive in bay 4, 4th drive in bay 1, 3 stayed in 3 and I just threw a new drive into 2 to check it and it works well--AND the sleds seem to work better in drive 2 and 4 now, though the sled "numbers", meaningless as they may be, don't line up (in fact I have 1,1,2,4)---It makes no sense to me, but it's working the way it is for now, so I'm not messing with it anymore. Thanks again!
