Q: resetting AirPort Express

I am changing network connections in my home.  So far, so good... with a few wrinkle.

I am having trouble resetting my Airport Express.

Current set-up:

iMac mid 2007 running 10.10.1

ethernet connection to 2TB Time Capsule (v 7.6.4).  The Time Capsule is NOT internet connected (by choice)

Airport Express 69e693

When I run AirPort Utility (v 6.3.4)it finds my WiFi internet connection and identifies my Time Capsule.  Green lights for both.

When I reset my AirPort Express, AirPort Utility discovers it in the "Other Wi-Fi Devices (1)" in the upper left of the Utility screen

When I select the AirPort Express from this menu it cycles through a "reading previous settings" screen, then ends with:

"An unexpected error occurred.  Try Again."

The AirPort express is only used to stream music to a stereo system.  It was previously working with the same iMac and Time Capsule under the old configuration (the TimeCapsule as connected to a Cable Modem/router by ethernet, and to the iMac via Wireless.)

Thoughts?  I'm guessing that by changing the settings on the Time Capsule to separate it from the WiFi network I have somehow affected the AirPort express?

The process for doing a factory default reset is:

    Factory default reset

    1. Disconnect the base station from its power source.
    2. Press and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip, then plug the base station back in while continuing to hold the button for approximately 5 seconds until you see the three status lights glow.
    3. Release the button.

    Thanks, but no luck.

Is there a different Airport Express model, and does it matter?  Mine has only 1 status light, not 3.  Following the Factory Reset instructions gave me a rapid flashing yellow light, then steady, then slow flashing, then steady again.

    Same error message.

The Airport express has been around for many years in different versions, exactly which model do you have? If you don't know , look at the original box or Run Airport Utilities and you should be able to tell from that too.

Finally, have you studied and used Resetting an AirPort base station FAQ - Apple Support?

I believe I came up with a solution.

I connected the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule via Ethernet.  This allowed AirPort Utility to identify the Express and connect it to the TimeCapsule.  I was then able to enter the settings and confirm connections, passwords, etc.  This also allowed me to update the Express firmware.

I was then able to disconnect the Ethernet cable, and it remains fully functional via Wi-Fi

I'll repost if this does not actually solve the problem.
