I've started to re-install OS X v10.4.1 on an iMac. After inserting disk 1 I realised that I've lost disk 2 - so can't complete the re-installation. How do I abort this program?

Power down, insert Disk #1, hold alt key when booting up.

That second Disc thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.
