It sounds like you are having an issue with your iPhone's screen orientation not functioning as expected at times, is that correct?
This article gives steps for troubleshooting screen orientation issues - If the screen doesn't rotate on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Since it seems to happen to you at random intervals, the steps for checking orientation lock settings won't be relevant, but the rest are, in particular -

If you checked your settings and your screen still doesn't rotate when using an app that should (like the Calculator app), follow these steps:
- Restart your iOS device.
- If the screen still won't rotate, back up and restore your device.

Aug 18, 2015 5:23 AM in response to Brett Lby quicksilvr1147,I neglected to mention that I had already tried these steps, and still at times cannot rotate the screen. I'm not sure if this is a hardware thing since the accelerometer still functions with the above temporary fixes. I remember it functioning just fine when my iOS software was at 8.3.
