You might want to check the ifixit.com site - if anyone has any info on that, they might.
FWIW, if your Superdrive in the iMac is dead, why not simply buy a far more reliable external burner rather than deal with the super slim, vertically installed drive.

I wholeheartedly agree with babowa regarding getting an external optical drive. Why, if you purchase a new Mac at a later date it probably won't have an optical drive so you could just transfer the external drive to your new Mac.
I also recommend getting one that had drawer loading than slot loading. This goes a long way to avoiding possible jams due to incorrect insertion, labels, etc.

That is the exact model I got when I needed to replace my (rather old) La Cie.
I agree with both of you, but this is for an imac's friend. he insists of having the internal dvd working again. probably because he uses it a lot and the USB ports are already busy with other peripherals.
Yeah I checked that site already but they don't mention anything about a 9.5mm drive.
