Q: disappeared database

i am on a mac pro running yosemite with aperture 3.6 and i no longer see my original database. currently my aplibrary file is like 8 MB and there is another file listed next to it called a .migratedaplibrary?

does anyone know what i am not understanding with this continuing genius level UI that i somehow can never figure out? i mean, has opening PHOTOS somehow imported all my images to this new program and somehow wiped out my aperture library database?

i know i got a prompt at one point that asked me WHICH of the aplibraries i wanted to use to open PHOTOS. this basically showed a list of THREE exactly same named aplibraries because one of them was on an external which was a backup of my hard drive and the other was on another external backup and for some reason photos wanted to know which of these i wanted to use (somewhwt understandable i guess).

but does anyone know why i am not seeing my 60 GB aplibrary?

i guess i can search for a file of this size but i have to go out of town and i was hoping to take care of some watermarking before i leave and besides this is /very/ disconcerting when i am running multiple backups before i go out of town...

thanks for any help.

OK. so i found out that the "migrated aplibrary" has the correct amount of data in it. the aplibrary is no good since it doesn't have any data in it.

however, if i point aperture to this database i get a prompt saying that the library has been migrated and changes won't be saved (or something similar).

can anyone explain how they are dealing with this if they have specific instances of workflow they want to handle in aperture? also, i would really like to finalize my data organization IN aperture and then migrate it to photos. is this still possible and if so how do i manage this?

    thanks.

The warning panel has a button "Open in Aperture". Click it.

The waring about "Changes are not saved" refers to the fact that the libraries are not linked.  If you edit the library in Aperture, you will not be able to see the edits in the migrated Photos library and vice versa.

    hi leonie,

    thanks again.

so basically one can use the two libraries independently - or rather i could treat the photos library like an appendix and just leave it there and not use it. then the issue is whether to bother to rename the "migrated aplibrary" which i suppose i should do.

i posted this on another thread you were kind enough to also help out on but i really hope there are no tricky issues with the Photos app that may have caused photos to get imported into that database instead of into aperture database.

    -

ACTUALLY - now that i look at it and think about it my "migrated" aperture library is showing 357 GB and my photoslibrary is showing 372 GB. does this tell me anything or do i just do a 1 to 1 comparison taking a look at most recently "IMPORTED photos" or "SYNCED photos" and see if anything accidentally made it's way into the photos library instead of the aperture library...

When I library (Aperture, iPhoto is migrated, it will basically remain the same.  Just the filename extension will change to indicate that that he library has been migrated.  I never had problems with simply renaming the filename extension back from ".migrated......".  Photos will not migrate the library a second time, if it still has the extension ".migrated ....". Renaming the extension solves this, or ignoring the warning, see:

If Photos won't open a library that you already migrated - Apple Support

The Photos Library does not use much additional space. The original files and previews are  hard links of the files in the original library. The sizes of the libraries are identical, but the image files inside are sharing the actual files on the disk.   See these links:

Six Colors: The (hard) link between Photos and iPhoto

    and

Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
