duplicate playlist

when I change songs in playlists in itunes on my imac, and then sync my iphone (all os and ios up-to-date), itunes the duplicates the playlist in both itunes and on the iphone. the duplicate playlists are original, without the changes i have made. is there anyway to stop itunes from doing this? it is driving me nuts. thanks in advance.
