DVD player on new iMacs 5K Retina?

Am I missing something??? I just bought a new 27" iMac 5K Retina display and there is no DVD player/burner? I paid this much for a new computer and I feel like I have gone back 15 years in Mac technology. My Apps don't work. Photos stinks and I cannot go back to Aperture.

I think I just made a big and expensive mistake!

Sound like you did not do any research and much a bunch of assumptions. Also I am asking the moderator to edit your post, not need to be crass.

Apple has not had DVD burner/players on any Macs for the past 3 years. If you want a DVD burner you need to buy an external one. Most people don't need one, so ask yourself if you really do or not. If you do then there are many to choose from, on the high end Apple makes the external SuperDrive. Another option is look on OWC's website (www.macsales.com) and you will find many that suit your needs. You can also shop at Amazon if you want.

In addition you can still use Aperture, however Apple announced well over a year ago they were not developing it any longer (along with iPhoto) and were transitioning to Photos for Mac. While Photos is not as full featured as Aperture was it will likely get there at some point.

Since so much software and many movies are available for download, Apple makes the optical drive optional. You can buy an Apple SuperDrive or any of a number of third-party external drives. You can even use the optical drive on an older Mac across your local network if you kept your old Mac and it runs an even vaguely recent version of OS X.

If your apps don't work, they may need updating to work with the latest version of OS X. Which apps, what versions, and what problems do you have?

Aperture 3.6 still works on the latest version of Yosemite. Again, what version do you have? What problems do you have using it?

Thank you for that information. Could you please elaborate on how I can still use Aperture?

I did do the research, but I did make assumptions. I just cannot believe Apple drifted away from the optical reader so soon. I realize Blockbuster is dead, but there are still multiple outlets for DVD movies and I like ro rip them using Handbrake, so I can put a few on my iPad for travel.

I still have my 24" iMac with SuperDrive, so I will have to keep it for a while before giving it to my daughter.

I for one am glad to see internal CD/DVD drives go by the way side.

Every computer that I have owned that had some sort of failure was always

with the CD/DVD drive!!!

External CD/DVD drives are cheap and when they die a whole lot less hassle

to replace. You also get the choice of choosing high performance drive over the

typical under performers generally installed as original equipment.,
