Q: Flashing ? folder

I have a 2009 Mac and have formatted the disk, made a bootable usb with Yosemite.

I have cleared the NVRAM ( i have 2 x 2 gig flash installed )

I have used the various key s to hold down on start up but all bring me back to a flashing ? folder

Please assist me in getting this 2009 model woking again

Yes, you should specifically not use FAT32 or anything other than Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a GUID partition scheme.

Go step by step and test.

thanks but i was unsuccessful the boot up usb disk keeps going to flashing ? folder also when i use the option key on boot up it takes me to a white screen

thank you it works.
started up the mac with the Option button and it took me to the installation

the issue was the USB needed to be in the correct format as you mentioned above.
