Q: Black screen external monitor

Hi!

I have a MacBook late 2009. I wanted to connect this MacBook to an Asus VN248HA monitor via a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and then a HDMI cable. My MacBook detects the external monitor, but the monitor stays black. Can anyone help me?
