Wearing an Apple watch in Atex environment (explosion proof)

Hello everyone,

since a few days I am the (proud) owner of an Apple Sports Watch.

As I like it a lot, I am thinking on buying one for my wife.

The thing is, she works in a chemical plant where large parts of it are ATEX environment (explosion proof).

As she does not want to remove her watch each time she goes to the production part of the site, (she needs to leave her iPhone at her desk)

we would like to know if the Apple Watch is ATEX proof and to which Class / Division before buying her an Apple Watch?

Has anyone else have experience wearing the watch in ATEX environmets?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hi,

As an one of those "safety guys" I'll like to give you my opinion.

this usually matches others but sometimes also may differ.

In the end one has to respect the employee's order about usage of personal stuff.

A slaughter would also not allow his staff to wear an iwatch but has other reasons.

So if I tell that you mustn't take Xyz to Ex areas that does not mean there would be no possibility.

It just means that a suitable device with ATEX is (or lets say should) already rated to be safe by the manufacturer.

Referring din en 1127-1 the only real issues at iwatch is I.e. charging or other energy transfers anr internal electricity. First may be avoided by leaving them in the office. But like in many cases you end at the battery. Din en 13463 gives a long list of suitable batteries and rules how to use them. But even the iwatche's one is OK I'd bet the current is not limited to match the regulation.

The rest of ignition src is nonsense for iwatch.

Also radio and light as it is quite too low.

OK - is there a wristband from Aluminium or case parts from it? That may be a concern, too... ;)

I saw affordable headlamps (40 eur) that just use 1 or 2 one-way batteries, an overcurrent protection and Led. So ATEX not always means expensive. But anyway, please keep your personal stuff out of that areas. Its not only your life that you risk...

Dennis

Hi

Explosive atmospheres: Charging or using Apple Watch in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere, such as in areas where the air contains high levels of flammable chemicals, vapors, or particles (such as grain, dust, or metal powders), may be hazardous. Obey all signs and instructions.

I would imagine that her company has a safety officer (or an entire department). I'd suggest your wife consult with them.
