have older work on my older mac pro 8 core processor and would like to upgrade to Yosemite so I can upgrade my safari. I see that my older FCP will not work with Yosemite and I'll have to purchase the new final cut pro X. So, will I be able to continue work on pro X from my older Final Cut Studio work?

Possibly it will work on 10.10, depending on the version. Final Cut Studio 3apps work on 10.10 with the exception of Motion and Qmaster Preference Pane.

To open an XML of FCP 6 or 7 you will need purchase the third party app, 7toX.

FCP 7.0.3 I guess I'll try the upgrade on Safari first. see if I can save a few $$. Looks like FC X looks like the old iMovie
To be clear, there is no upgrade path from legacy FCP to FCP X. Either stay with 7 or pay for X. Whatever you decide.
