Q: will final cut pro X upload older Final Cut Studio work

Possibly it will work on 10.10, depending on the version. Final Cut Studio 3apps work on 10.10 with the exception of Motion and Qmaster Preference Pane.

To open an XML of  FCP 6 or 7 you will need purchase the third party app, 7toX.

To be clear, there is no upgrade path from legacy FCP to FCP X. Either stay with 7 or pay for X. Whatever you decide.
