how do i reset my iphone 5c to factory settings

I don't know the passcode on the phone (my son's friends changed it and no one can remember what it is). I have plugged it into the computer and followed the instructions to restore without syncing (hold down top button and home button at the same time until the restore screen pops up) however it never pops up to choose restore.
