What would cause corrupt serial number to be displayed for built-in iSight (FaceTime) camera?

Trying to fix up an old MacBook Pro 17-inch Late 2008. Built-in camera has never worked (though the light comes on.) have tried all known fixes found on Support Communities to no avail. Discovered that the serial number for the camera appears corrupted when displayed via About This Mac under the USB Device Tree.

What would cause a corrupt serial number to be displayed for built-in iSight (FaceTime) camera?

Is this a symptom or cause of built-in camera not working?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 17-inch Late 2008 Model

Something is wrong. You may need Apple special test equipment diagnostic hardware and/or software to determine what it is.

Perhaps. Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider can tell you. They may need to physically inspect your Mac in order to tell you.
