Iphone 4s stopped giving text message alerts

My iphone 4s worked fine until a couple of months ago I noticed that I was missing text messages when they arrived. I have since checked and rechecked the settings and confirmed that all other sounds work normally. Its just the message alert. I was hoping that the latest IOS update that was installed today might rectify the issue but it hasn't.

I have tried rebooting and changing the alert tones. nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have a work around or a fix?

iPhone 4S, iOS 8.4.1

Hi Noosafisher,

I understanding that you're not hearing the desired alert when receiving a text message. This may be due to settings in Settings > Notifications > Messages. You may need to verify that you've set the notifications for Messages to produce the desired notification type and alert.

Set notification options. Go to Settings > Notifications. Tap an app to set its notification options. For example, choose to view a notification from the Lock screen. You can also tap Edit to arrange the order of app notifications. Touch , then drag it to a new position.

in this case it was something more obscure. After checking with a friend, we found out that the problem was only with messages received from one contact. Of course it is my wife who sends me text messages!

THe remedy was to select one of her messages, look at Details and reset the do not disturb that had somehow been set for her. I have no idea how it was done and I am not sure I can do it again without first receiving a message from someone who I would like to set the individual Do Not Disturb tag.

Thanks for posting! This problem was driving me crazy. Same thing happened to me with one contact. I have no idea how it got set to Do Not Disturb. Weird. Fixed now. Thanks!
