If your Wi-Fi is capable of generating a 5 GHz signal, try that.

Aug 17, 2015 6:27 PM in response to Eric Rootby nopoweruser,Thanks Eric,
I did a lights out test on the computer after dark. When I pressed any key after putting the computer to sleep I watched the external HD for the Time Machine begin flashing immediately, even though the computer did not immediately wake up it had responded to the key pressing and 30 seconds later the screen appeared. The mouse began to work later after a single click. I then went through a series of tests where I shut the computer down and manually restarted it with the "on" button. I used the restart command from the drop down menu to see how the computer behaved that way. The final result is that with these 2 restarts the computer has returned to it's normal wake up speed and behaviour.Puzzling since the upgrade install had an automatic restart built in. Thanks very much for your research and reply.
Paul
