Q: I want to replace the hard drive, but do not have the disc to reinstall the OS system. Can I replace it with Time Machine?

I have a PowerBook G4 Aluminium 1.5 GHz.

I have a replacement hard drive, but do not have the disc to reinstall the Mac OS X 10.5.8 that I am currently using. I want to keep using this, because I use AppleWorks and most of my files are in this format!

Can I re-install the entire contents of my current hard drive, from my Time Machine backup or do I need to seek out the original discs. My other problem is that the  super drive is currently not working!

Help

Not on that OS; Time Machine backups didn't themselves become bootable until 10.8. Use the Disk Utility's Restore feature or a product such as Carbon Copy Cloner instead.

Thanks for the information. I am not sure how the Disc Utility restore would work if I have put a new hard drive in the machine, but the Carbon Copy Cloner does a 30 day free trial so that should solve the problem.

    Duncan,
