Q: how can I tell Siri to stop an app?

I've tried "stop", "kill, and "quit" and Siri types this correctly (so my pronounciation is ok) but won't follow my command.

e.g. "Quit "runtastic" does not stop the app.

What's the magic word?

iPhone 6, iOS 8.4

I don't think that's possible. I asked Siri to go to the home screen and she told me to press the home button. If that's of each or you would like it you can let Apple feedback know:http://www.apple.com/feedback/

What you're trying to do isn't actually necessary in most cases(which may be why Apple doesn't include a way to do it). When you switch away from most apps, they are, for the most part, suspended. There is no need to "quit" them. Exceptions would be apps that play music in the background and apps that are using location services for navigation. Yes, Runtastic would fall under the latter if you've given it permission to use location services. Unlike some similar apps, Runtastic doesn't give you the option of using location services only when the app is in use. You would need to stop if from tracking you within the app.

    Thanks AJ, Meg,

Putting your two answers together it sounds as if

    a) this is not possible and

    b) this omission is sometimes annoying

Then I guess it's a matter of waiting for Apple to implement this, just like they eventually added the capability of Siri to switch on and off Bluetooth.

Siri can't do much within third party apps. So, it couldn't stop Runtastic from tracking you. And, as noted, Apple doesn't consider "stopping" an app a necessary function based on the way that multitasking works. Whether Apple will allow third party apps to use Siri in the future is unknown.

    HI Meg,

iOS can start and stop apps. Siri can start them but it would be mighty convenient if it could stop them, too.

Runtastic is just one example, but I am more concerned about IoT apps, like a Bluetooth padlock where the control is in the appliance (padlock button) and the authorisation is in the app.

I want to stop the app so that no one can open the padlock. Siri would allow me to do this without fumbling around in iOS menus.

That will quit Siri. It will not quit any other apps.
