how do I watch a video frame by frame in Quicktime?

I recorded a storm on my iPhone5 (at night) so the play back is pitch black untilm a flash of lightening occurs. I'd like to be able to go through frame by frame so that I can pick out the good shots and make a photo out of it.

I read, somewhere, that Quicktime was good for this so have downloaded it but can't find how to do it.

Can any one help?

Cheers

Mac or Windows?

The right left arrow keys can step through frames and you can copy from the Edit menu.
