mac mini won't restart after yosemite update,

After yosemite last update or upgrade , call it what you want, my friends mac-mini wont restart. mac goes to restart screen and jams in half of progression bar, he left it on for hours on end, and nothing it'S jammed. Thank you for any help... I have a MacMini my self, i'm really good in microsoft world but in apples I'm still in baby steps...

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

My friend tried what you've proposed, apparently it didn't work, I told him to bring the wounded animal to my home for me to try it on my own, I've redone what you've suggested, it seems to be working but it's taking for ever, after an hour it's barely in the middle of the progress bar, is it normal or do I have to try something else. Thanks for your help, it's appreciated...
