Does anyone know why my photos show up out of chronological order when imported from camera? Most of the photos will be in order, but a few will be randomly placed. This happens with each upload, and never happened with iPhoto and this camera.

Since I have been using Photos, every time I upload pictures from my camera, 3 or 4 of the pictures will be completely out of chronological order in the Last Import view. For example, today I went on a hike and took about 50 pictures while on the hike, including the waterfall at the destination. I also took 5 pictures at a viewpoint on the way back. When I uploaded this group of photos, a picture of the waterfall shows up near the trailhead pictures, and a picture of the viewpoint shows up among the waterfall pictures. If I look at the time info for the pictures, these 3 or 4 pictures per import are completely misfiled, based on time. That is, a picture taken at 1:56 pm will be amidst a group taken at 11:30 am.

After looking for a similar problem in these support pages, I tried looking at the import in different settings. Strangely, the pictures show up in correct order when viewed in the All Photos setting, but not in Last Import or Photos (the 'Moments' view). I did not have this issue with the same camera or any other camera, when using iPhotos.

For my purposes this is frustrating, because I used to be able to sort into events, and the photos would be in correct order within the events. I know that is water under the bridge, or over the waterfall,at this point, until we (hopefully) get back some of what we had before with the next update, but I would appreciate any ideas about this strange disordering of photos.

I am only using the iMac, not sharing with other devices.

I have the same problem when importing photos from my iPhone 5S. An example: I made seven photos this morning, numbered 49 to 55, spread over 3 minutes while sitting at my desk, and after importing them to my Mac (running El Capitan) the photos show up all out of order in Last Import and Photos: 55, 53, 50, 51, 54, 52, 49. They are shown in the right order in All Photos, but I prefer to have them split by date as in the Photos album.

The All Photos view is showing the photos sorted by the date of import, not by the capture date in the EXIF tag.

I have also occasionally photos withering dates mixed in with others, and looking more closely I found that the photos in question were the preview jpegs of video clips, that do not have an EXIF capture date tag. These previews may be off by several hours when viewed in the Moments, but are sorted correctly in the All Photos view, because they were imported according to the sort order of the filenames.

Did you take a few videoclips at the water fall?

Thank you for replying. I did not take any video clips, but I think I may be on the track of the problem.

When I first migrated to Photos, I noticed that I could not name my "events" anymore, and the only way of naming them was with GPS input from the camera with the photos, so I turned the GPS in my camera on.

When I scroll through the group of photos with the 'info' box open, I notice that the out of order photos do not have a small map location open at the bottom. Other photos taken in that same spot do have the little map, so now I am guessing that my camera is slow to pick up the GPS signal for some reason. We do hike in remote areas that have no cell phone service. I looked at photos from other days, and it is the photos with no GPS data that are out of order.

I think I will turn my camera GPS off - I don't need this info for my purposes, since I know where I was. I see how it could be useful to have, but I would rather have my pictures in chronological order. At least until the Photos ap allows for reordering of photos.

Thank you, and do you have any other comments/ideas about this issue? Do you think I should send this to the Apple people? I realize it may be my camera that is the problem, but perhaps the Photos ap could have a better workaround, such as letting us reorder and name our photos as we could with iPhotos.

GPS can be iffy - you do not say what camera but for my Sony camera's there is a monthly GPS assist file I download to the camera that makes GPS acquisition faster - although even then it can be a problem and on the Sony camera until its gets a good signal it continues to use the previous location so it is even worse since Photos can not correct this yet

Sometimes I take a shot on my iPhone to give me the correct location as a reference

Personally I leave the GPS on even though it is not perfect - I like having the record of locations and ability to map them

Here is what Sony says

I find it a bit complicated

I suspect that you can do what I do on my Alpha 55 - download the current GPS assist file, mount the Memory card and drag the assist.dat file to Private ==> Sony ==> GPS

Like this except directly to the Memory card rather than using the camera (you can use the camera if you wish - you do this in the finder not in Photos)

https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/32794/~/can-the-gps-assist-dat a-be-updated-with-a-macintosh-computer%3…

although that article uses the camera to mount the card you can do it directly to the card using a card reader
