Exercise in activity app doesn't work

Hey all,

I just installed iOS 9 beta public 3 on my iPhone 6 and have WatchOS 1.0.1.

Yesterday Exercise in Activity App was properly in green around the round but today it no longer moves, i don't program the exercise app, but I've never done and it worked correctly until this morning. Move and stand still working

I saw several people had this problem, you have found a solution?

The exercise ring on Apple Watch requires activity above a "brisk walk" - with a sustained increase in heart rate for at least 1 minute - in order to give credit.

If you are not using the Workout app, it's important for your arm to swing naturally as you walk or run, because the Activity app relies on arm motion and the accelerometer to track movement.

Ensure that you have Wrist Detection turned on (Apple Watch iPhone app > General > Wrist Detection toggle).

You could test doing a workout, using the Workout app to start and end your activity. For example, try a brisk outdoor walk.

I've just been on a 32 minute outdoor walk with the workout app running but the exercise ring is showing only five minutes. Arm swing was natural (as far as I can tell) and average heart rate was 84BPM - I walked 'vigorously' throughout. This is the second time this has happened, both times on difficult terrain - steep hills and soft sand.

When I started using the workout app I calibrated it with iPhone connected (it was connected during today's walk too). Is is possible that my calibration walk was too fast and/or vigorous and the app is now not recognising what I'm doing as exercise? If so, how do I re-calibrate?

Hi Jon

According to Apple, "Every full minute of movement equalling or exceeding the intensity of a brisk walk counts toward your daily Exercise and Move goals. Any activity below the intensity of a brisk walk counts only toward your daily Move goal."

It is possible that your walk, although strenuous (especially given the terrain), did not meet the watch's determination of brisk exercise. Also check that you are wearing your watch snugly during exercise, which enables the heart rate sensors to work optimally.

Further calibration over time can improve the accuracy of calorie, distance, Move, and Exercise estimations. Note that the calibration instructions advise finding "an open, flat area outside that offers good GPS reception and clear skies".

If you unpair and re-pair your Apple Watch, one of the few items of data that you do lose is calibration data (also synced playlists, cards used for Apple Pay on your watch and watch passcode) - so you could certainly do that:

I posted this in another thread -

So, I have been doing ALOT of research on this, and I am a bit of a spreadsheet geek. I started wondering, if it is based on pace/heart rate than there must be a specific heart rate that the apple watch is looking for. When I look at my watch when I am working out, it has me between 130 and 140. So then I went into the health app and looked at my heart rate data. During a workout, the watch checks your heart rate every 5 seconds. I used my Excel and i entered in all of my heart rate readings and what time they were taken. I took a 21 minute walk this morning, and only 11 minutes of it was credited to exercise. I analyzed my data, and there was only a total of 11 minutes where by heart rate was 75% or higher of my max heart rate. 75% of my max is 133, so everything that 133 or higher was counted. So right, wrong or infuriating, it would seem, according to my data, that if your HR is not at 75%, it will not be counted towards your exercise circle.

Dear Apple-please change the HR minimum to 70% . My legs can only walk so fast 🙂. Thank you.
