I have an iMac that has a defunct built in optical drive, I bought a new Apple Superdrive but after plugging in the USB, my machine cannot see it.
Any help would be appreciated

Apple SuperDrive only works w/Macs that shipped w/o optical readers/writers. Return it and get an ext one. They're usually under $50 USD.
27" i7 iMac (Mid 2011) refurb, OS X Yo (10.10.5), Mavs, ML & SL, G4 450 MP w/10.5 & 9.2.2
Strange but it used to work, I thought there was a fix somewhere but can't find it
From the desdription page:
System Requirements: Compatible with the following computers:
MacBook Pro with Retina display
MacBook Air
iMac (late 2012) and later
Mac mini (late 2009) and later
Mac Pro (late 2013)
Since you didn't specify the machine, I assume yours doesn't meet those.
mine only show up in finder when there is a dics in it
Thanks for popping in. Not having one, it wasn't clear what the issue might be about.
