Q: Received text without phone....

......So, I left my phone at home today by accident, not an issue in itself, however just had the strangest thing with my watch.

A guy I work with said to me this morning, oh did you get my text (sent at 8:07 this morning about 50 minutes and 30 miles after I left home), obviously I said no.

So, here's the oddness.... just went over to Pret and used my watch to apple pay for a coffee, no sooner had I swiped to pay then I got his text (with the 8:07 receive time)

Watch is still showing not connected to phone, as it's still at home 44 miles way.........

I can only think that the card reader in Pret uses the same Vodafone network as my phone, however as we know, 'same network' tethering is not with us till WatchOS2.

Just thought I would share that one, be interested to hear anyone else's thoughts on it but certainly a weird one.

Cheers

As long as you are on a 'known' WiFi it will get text messages without having to have your iPhone.

Thanks for your reply, although I'm not sure I understand....

I was not on a known WiFi, I was in a coffee shop and it was my understanding that the watch itself has no WiFi capabilities until OS2?

The phone is at home, and yes it will be connected to my home WiFi but the watch certainly isn't, and I'm not sure how the routing/NAT would be working getting back to my phone.....

    Thanks

Have you been to that same coffee shop with your iPhone before? If so then it is a known WiFi.

About Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on Apple Watch - Apple Support

    Compatible Wi-Fi for Apple Watch

Your Apple Watch can connect to a Wi-Fi network:

    • If your iPhone, while connected to your watch with Bluetooth, has connected to the network before
    • If the Wi-Fi network is 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz

For example, Apple Watch won't connect:

    • To 5GHz Wi-Fi, or public networks requiring logins, subscriptions, or profiles
    • If your paired iPhone has never connected to that network before

Hmmmm, well I definitely didn't know that. However Pret WiFi is a public network and will require logging in, something I have not done before on my iPhone...

Still baffling me slightly but interesting about the WiFi connect to the phone, and explains why that doesn't happen at home as the router is 5GHZ connected to the phone.

    Thanks a million..
