Aug 17, 2015 4:18 PM in response to cliveoneby BobHarris,This is a guess, but each of the 2 panics listed have the same backtrace
Backtrace terminated-invalid frame pointer 0xbfff7b58
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.ATIRadeonX1000(6.3.6)@0x94f000->0x9aafff
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x942000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x920000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x909000
which seems to involve the ATIRadeon Graphics subsystem.
It is possible your ATIRadeon is failing.
This is all just guessing

Aug 18, 2015 2:41 AM in response to BobHarrisby cliveone,Thanks, Bob. If your guess is correct, is this a hardware issue, and therefore not fixable? Or is it something I can fix with by starting again with the original OS disk? And what, if any, would the tie-in be with Firefox?
Thanks,
Clive

Aug 18, 2015 6:32 AM in response to cliveoneby BobHarris,I do suspect a hardware issue.
Why firefox? They use the screen.Graphics cards (chip sets) are specialized computers with all kinds of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that can be called to perform different graphic drawing tasks. It is possible Firefox has decided to use one of the APIs that is not frequently used by other graphics users. Just like maybe you do not use the Applications -> Chess program that came with your Mac, but maybe a relative comes to visit that just loves Chess and wants to play on your Mac.
If you have the original installation disks
<Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support>
Although your system is rather old, so the above link may be for much newer systems.
I would suggest you make a Genius Bar appointment, and take your Mac in for "Free" evaluation. If they find anything, then you get to choose to pay for repair, or just decide it is time to get a new Mac (like a 15" Macbook Pro, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Retina Display, Force Touch Trackpad - OK, enough with trying to spend your money).
Other avenues of experimentation. You could try installing a new copy of the operating system on an external disk, or an unused partition and see if the clean operating system does better.
But I do want to check just one thing. Your system summary says
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
But this is the Mountain Lion forum, and at the minimum the Mac would need a Core 2 Duo chip (the 2 is important, as the Core Duo is a 32 bit CPU but the Core 2 Duo is a 64 bit CPU and Mountain Lion needs a 64-bit CPU). It could have been a typo, or maybe you are just posting in the wrong forum.
And you forum signature is a bit out of date
PowerBook G3 Pismo, Mac OS X (10.2.x)
I know this is not a Pismo (which I used to own; great machine, but it was better with Panther 10.3 vs your listing of 10.2).

Aug 18, 2015 2:13 PM in response to BobHarrisby cliveone,Thanks very much, Bob. This is very useful. You're right, I got the wrong cat. I'm on 10.6, which is Snow Leopard. If you need to kick me out of the forum now, go ahead! I'm guessing the info you gave me still applies, though. I'm not sure I have the original installation disks, so I might just go the Genius Bar route.
Frankly, at the moment everything seems fine as long as I don't use Firefox. So I may just leave it at that. At least I know there's a hardware issue which may recur at any time. Meanwhile I can save up for a Macbook Air, which is what I've been ******* after.
