Q: How to configure Logic 8 so that you can listen to a project as you're recording a new track

Hello - I am currently working on a project in Logic 8 (installed on a G4 desktop mac), and I want to record myself scratching over the material I already have in Logic.

The issue is that, since I'm using a Presonus Firebox to record in to Logic, I have to change the audio preferences from "Built in Audio" to "Presonus Firebox",

which means that at the moment I cannot listen to the project and record at the same time. This is a problem because I have to be able to listen to the beat I made in order to scratch to it in time. It seems like this should be a pretty simple problem to fix, and might require some tinkering with the G4's audio settings, but I cannot for the life of me figure it out. Help!

Thank you. I should have been more specific - I *could* just use my headphones and call it a day, but I can do this using Garageband no problem.

I just don't want to use Garageband to record anymore - Logic is supposed to be a recording interface anyway....and a much more sophisticated DAW. In other words, I already know that this set up must be possible since I can do it in Garageband.

So to be more clear - here is a description of what I am already able to do in Garageband, but can't accomplish in Logic for some reason:

My DJ mixer has two outputs - the mains go to my pre-amp, and the recording outs obviously go to the Presonus, which goes to the G4 via a firewire

cable. What I'd like is to be able to run an audio cable from the headphone jack on my G4 directly to my pre amp. That way, I can hear both at the same time through my speakers.

If I can do this in Garageband using the same hardware, shouldn't it be a no brainer to set up in Logic??

Nope, as DSS mentions....the only option is to use headphones with the Presonus, - or - run the mains out of the Presonus into your mixer. Garageband was able to use a separate Input and Output, mainly because it was considered non-professional software. There's a degradation of audio that occurs when not using the same Input and Output device. Logic was considered professional software and has a single setting for the audio device, so the audio is not resampled.

This was changed in Logic 9 when the option to have a separate Input and Output device was added.
